I just started reading The Road by America writer Cormac McCarthy. I haven’t gotten very far due so no opinion will be based on the book summary itself.
But I find The Road sort of difficult to read. It’s not that I don’t understand the the author is saying or whatnot. It comes from a grammar sense, in which is difficult to understand. In most novels, when two persons are talking amongst themselves, quotation marks are used to distinguish between what is being said and what is being described. As I started reading the book, I noticed that the quotation marks were missing. Maybe I am missing the point but since I have not read very far, I have yet to see it.
I also noticed fragment sentences as well as run-ons. Now while McCarthy does paint vivid images with this words, I find it very difficult to really get into the story. Even though the lack of dialogue and punctuation as well as the general format can be confusing for me (I tend to prefer more modern formats), I will give it another try because I always give a book the chance of reading.
If I can’t finish reading it, I won’t post a review.
